Class AR Program
Our Class AR training program covers Schedule 1, Class AR vehicle operation, and backing. The course includes 16 hours of in-class and in-vehicle training. The program will review the components required to successfully complete the MTO road test.
MTO-Approved AR Licence Training Program
This course will prepare you for the Class AR Road test and help you feel confident and comfortable driving a class AR vehicle.
Classroom (8 hours): The in-class portion will consist of theory and yard work.
In Vehicle (8 hours): The in-vehicle portion will consist of two 4-hour lessons, one-on-one with an instructor.

What is an AR licence?
A Restricted Class A (AR) licence allows you to operate certain truck and trailer combinations where the trailer has a gross weight of more than 4,600 kg. It is designed for drivers who need to tow heavy trailers but do not require a full tractor-trailer (AZ) licence.
What can I drive with an AR?
An AR licence allows you to operate:
- Pickup trucks towing large equipment trailers
- Utility trailers
- Horse trailers
- RV and recreational trailer combinations that require a Class A licence
- Vehicles covered under Class G and D (provided you meet any additional endorsement requirements).
Is MELT required for an AR licence?
No. Ontario’s Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) is not required to obtain an AR licence. However, if you later decide to upgrade to a full AZ licence, you will need to complete MELT before taking the full Class A road test.
Do I need a Z Endorsement with an AR licence?
No, but If the truck you are driving is equipped with air brakes, you’ll need a Z Endorsement. An ARZ still does not permit you to tow a trailer that is equipped with air brakes.
How long does it take to complete an AR program?
Our AR program at KnowledgeSurge includes 16 hours of training broken down into 8 hours in-class, and 8 hours in-vehicle. Course length depends on your availability for lessons as well as road test dates, but on average it takes about 2 weeks to complete from start to finish.

Do I need to use my own vehicle for the training?
Yes. Our AR Program is designed to use your own truck and trailer combination during training. This allows you to learn with the equipment you’ll actually be driving after you obtain your licence. The vehicle and trailer needs to be available for all lessons and road test date.
Do I need to book my own Ministry road test?
No. Your Ministry road test will be booked by our school as part of the program, making the process simple and convenient. However, if you prefer to book your own road test, you can choose to do so as it is your vehicle and trailer being used for the test.
Do you offer flexible scheduling?
Yes. We offer flexible training schedules so you can complete your training around your work and personal commitments.
